One page pitch for thriller opening

One Page Pitch

Working title: Droplet

Film Genre: Forensic Thriller

Length: 123 minutes 47 seconds

Target Audience: 18- 41 year olds

Tag line: How many droplets does it take to create a puddle?

What if premise: Alice was an ordinary girl during her childhood and lived a very family orientated life.  She was a sister of three and was the middle child, often forgotten or left behind.  She was always the normal one, from the outside, but inside was a completely different story; possessed by the thought of power a new serial killer was unveiled.

The story synopsis: As a result of Alice’s troubled past, her coping mechanism was an abstract way and certainly not an ideal one.  The thought of control and power took over her inhibitions and there was born the serial killer, the only time she could feel a sense of power was stood over someone watching them take their final breaths.

Statement of intent: To raise awareness of neglect and noticing the signs of inside suffering.  It is a film to show how quickly situations like this can escalate without the right without the right kind of attention and I feel that if this storyline was portrayed in a television drama it would show that it takes a lot longer for these emotions to build up whereas I want to show just how quick these feelings can come.

Visual realisation: This film will be very tense and eerie thriller, with lots of clues dropped throughout and many false leads.  This film will have a slow pace juxtaposing many other films of this genre.  Another way this film is going to juxtapose others is because I’m going to try and make the audience have a sense of compassion and lovingness for Alice, and make her completely unsuspected throughout; giving it a sense of realism that it can happen to anyone and that no-one is born evil.

Audience appeal: Quite a lot of the target audience will be parents or if not potential parents.  They will be able to relate to many of the situations the fact that within parenthood there are struggles but you can’t afford to push your family away as it will only make things worse, they will feel a sense of sympathy for Alice and her situation as they would never want that for their own, this will then create a consciousness within themselves and will ensure that the same situation would never occur for them.

Screenplay (Jaws)

A screenplay includes camera shots as well as the script.  1 minute equals around 1 page of script/ screenplay, not all screenplays need to contain dialogue.  When making my thriller open I will make my screenplay before my storyboard, this is because, it will make storyboarding and production much easier as it takes into consideration camera angles and makes it easier to draw the scenes which are described.  The visualisation comes after the screenplay is created.

Things I will include in my screenplay/ script for my thriller opening:
- Include location, setting and time of day.
- Introduce key characters and include a short description of who they are/ what they look like.
- Include key dialogue between characters and details of their actions and expressions.
- Include details of where the camera is in each scene.

This is the Screenplay for the Jaws scene
Chrissie's last swim, from looking at the screenplay it shows that some things were changed during the final production.  For example the part of the attack, a number of things were cut out and replaced and this was for pacing purposes and helped to add tension to the attack.

The Fall: Gender Textual Analysis

Although I completed this as part of my study of the representation of gender for my AS exam, it is relevant to the my coursework as, in planning for this, I will need to consider how the representation of gender is constructed through the use of camera shots, mise-en-scene, editing and sound. This will hopefully enable me to represent characters in a variety of different ways in my film opening.

Preliminary Task Evaluation- written

These are some photos taken during the production stage of our Preliminary Task, photos of the area we used, and how we managed to create the first scene to a good standard.

During post- production we decided to make a storyboard this is so when we came to filming our Preliminary task it was much easier as we had all the scenes planned out, however, even though a plan was made it wasn't stuck to for every scene and this was due to the realisation of potential continuity errors if this scene was shot.  For example the ring scene was missed out due to Lauren not wearing rings from the beginning.  Below is photos from the storyboard:

Before we started filming our Preliminary Task we decided to practice some basic camera shots with the DSLR camera, to ensure the quality of our final production was at a high level.  The camera shots included: Low angle shot, Two- shot, Long shot and Over the shoulder shot.

This is our final cut of our Preliminary Task, I will soon be posting a follow up with my evaluation of the production, followed by an auditory video of myself and Lauren answering a few more questions.

Summary of article and all things post- production

During post- production for the TV series Utopia Munden and colourist Aidan Farrell carefully colour- correct each shot to ensure that they maintained their comic book look.  They purposely use colours like yellow and turquoise to help with the comic book look, but as the TV series has grown they have been able to pay for more yellow and turquoise colours to be used within the sets this is to make the job easier and less time consuming during post- production.

Today we learnt about post- production and what post- production actually entails.  Post- production is the last stage of film production regarding sound, editing and titling.  People often think post- production is for correcting mistakes that were made during filming and this can be done during post- production but that is not the sole purpose of it.  Planning (pre-production) and production is essential as post- production can only do so much if the original footage is inadequate.  And finally, in post- production the audio will be mixed and extra sounds will be added.

Things I will need to consider when I have completed my film opening and are working in post- production: Making sure the mise-en-scene is done correctly this is to make sure the opening is believable for the audience and doesn't present any form of confusion for them; this may result in using dramatic license throughout to make post- production easier and prevent any re- filming as a result of mise-en-scene and continuity errors.

First Blog

Welcome to my blogsite!

Media Studies is a completely new study for me which is quite daunting and will present a challenge but, I'm extremely excited for what the course will bring as I have always had a love watching and engaging in films.  I'm hoping Media Studies is going to help me understand why things are done the way they are on films and TV, and why they have such an impact on the audience.

I can't wait to get started!  I'm especially looking forward to the editing of my Media content; this is because I feel that the films/ TV programmes are made within the editing and without editing people like you and me would simply not watch them, and for this purpose I'm intrigued to see how it's done and give it a go myself.

We have already been set our first task (to create a 2 and a half minute film opening) and I can't wait to get behind (or even in front) of the camera, I've already had a few surging ideas using the different camera angles we have recently learnt.

Hopefully you will enjoy the final film on this journey!
